Generalized problematic internet use, emotional regulation and self-esteem in adults

Introduction Many internationally studies, in the last two decades, found problematic internet use associated with a variety of psychosocial problems, but Portugal this is recent research question specially adults. Objectives To explore relationship between Internet use, emotional regulation and self-esteem. Methods 138 Portuguese subjects (77.5% females), mean age 27.76 years old ( SD = 8.98, range: 18-58) filled versions Generalized Problematic Use Scale-2, Difficulties Emotion Regulation Scale Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Results Negative consequences subscale generalized was positively correlated all difficulties subscales negatively Self-Esteem, daily hours usage. A similar result for Self-Deficient subscale, except Clarity subscale. Mood Strategies, Goals Self-Esteem. Males showed higher levels Consequences. Age onset were Regulation, statistically significant difference Consequences marital status levels, professional situation, median scores divorced single without student subjects; no differences educational level. Conclusions especially their Consequences, dysregulation, low self-esteem, lower onset, being or student, it more prevalent males. Disclosure No relationships.
